Register NOW for the Heroes at Sea Day of the Seafarer initiative to pay tribute to our mariners around the world

Our HEROES at Sea

Last year, “Heroes at Sea” was created to raise awareness about the role of the mariner, and to pay tribute to seafarers around the world. Engaging in a walk, jog, cycle and/or swim, participants were able to more than double the goal of “circumnavigating” the globe in solidarity with the mariners – and raised nearly $50,000 which was distributed to seafarer welfare centers. There was also a Tribute Concert creating greater awareness.

The challenges for seafarers remain. This year, we continue to salute our Heroes at Sea with the iconic “Walk, Jog, Cycle and Swim” to commemorate the Day of the Seafarer. The event will be run from May 25th to June 25th.

The month-long circumnavigation serves primarily as a tribute and reminder to our Heroes at Sea (seafarers) that their commitment and efforts are appreciated and not forgotten. During the period, participants and corporate supporters may post messages, photos and videos of thanks and encouragement (on the dedicated social media platform) to lift the spirits of seafarers around the world and let them know that they are valued.

TRIBUTE MESSAGES TO SEAFARERS
AROUND THE WORLD

Every seaman is not only a navigator, but a merchant and also a soldier.

Kitack Lim
Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization

Esben Poulsson, Executive Chairman,

Enesel Pte. Ltd.

On behalf of the International Chamber of Shipping, I would like to congratulate the Singapore Nautical Institute and the world maritime heritage society for organising the Heroes at Sea initiative. The covid19 crisis has brought about a greater understanding and recognition of the vital role played by seafarers in keeping trade moving, often in highly challenging circumstances. Seafarers are indeed the world’s unsung heroes, and they deserve our respect, admiration and support.

Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive,

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore

I warmly welcome the Heroes at Sea initiative. I hope that more like-minded partners will step forward to help our global seafarer community tide over this difficult period. Together, we will overcome!

Participation may be on an individual or family registration that is on-line. For corporate level participation and sponsorship, there are Diamond (US$10,000 and above), Gold (US$5,000), Silver (US$2,500) and Bronze (US$1,000) levels. A Gratitude plaque, medal and certificate will be presented to sponsoring companies and all participants will each receive an e-Certificate. There are no race timings nor prizes for positions, although there is a global leaderboard. You can choose to just do a walk, or any combination of all 4 types (walk, jog, cycle or swim) and record your distances on the Strava mobile app. We are suggesting a minimum target of 10 km, but of course, you might wish to set your individual bar higher (last year’s top mileage was xxx).  For all types of activities, it must be done in a safe environment as the organizers cannot be responsible for injuries.

use of tribute funds

All monies raised, net of expenses, will go to seafarers’ welfare efforts globally and locally. One half of the net proceeds will be allocated to the global efforts of Mission to Seafarers and Sailors’ Society with a scholarship stipend being given to a student at the World Maritime University. The remaining half will be distributed to the local seafarer welfare centers in the regions where the funds are generated.
